Pentax DCF HS 8×36 Binocular (Camo)

November 13, 2008

The Pentax DCF HS 8 x 36 Binocular offers an 8x magnification in a high performance, full-sized, water-resistant body that features a camouflage finish to help keep you hidden from your target. The DCF HS high-performance binocular features a simplified body design and a lightweight, fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate body encased in a full-body rubber housing to protect the optics and inner mechanisms from external shock, and assure a firm, comfortable hold.

The DCF HS combines multi-coated optical elements and high-refraction BaK4-glass roof prisms, and is treated with phase-chated coating plus a new super-reflection coating to ensure a high resolution, high contrast image over the entire image field. Protective glass is incorporated in front of the objective focusing elements to prevent the intrusion of dust into the inner body, which helps the DCF HS offer JIS Class 4 weather resistant capability for use around the water and in the rain. And as if that’s not enough, the rubber housing and the protective glass also serve to upgrade the weather resistance on these binoculars, while the inner-focus optical design adds to the durability. These binoculars feature a helicoid eyepiece ring with four-click stops that give the most comfortable eye relief, and click-stop adjustments that lock in the right eyepiece diopter. The fully multi-coated lenses not only increase light transmission and color quality, but provide for long eye-relief for viewing with or without glasses. This unit weighs 23.2 ounces, measures 5.1 x 2.1 x 6.1 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a manufacturer’s limited lifetime warranty.

Customer Review: Birds of Montana software
I am using this software in a bird identification unit in my elementary library. It is a really well set up software program. The recordings of the bird songs are great. I would recommend this product to other bird watchers. Buy from here…

This is a great pair of binoculars, especially for the price. I purchased them as a gift for my husband, but they’re so easy to use, I like to use them too! Buy from here…

A Birder’s Guide to the Chicago Region

November 10, 2008

Customer Review: Two Great Birders = One great Birding Guide!
Both Lynne Carpenter and Joel Greenberg are well known in the Chicago area as great birders. And I’ve been lucky to have had the pleasure of birding with both of them. I am so grateful that they’ve committed their knowledge to this book. If you bird in the Chicago area then this book is a “must have” for your birding library.
Customer Review: Please do more cities!
Absolutely unparalleled — I completely agree that this book is the best I have seen of its kind. I only wish there were such exquisitely detailed birding information available for other cities I frequent, such as Philly, D.C., and Boston. Buy from here…

South Carolina Bird Watching: A Year-Round Guide

November 10, 2008

Like gardening, bird watching is a fast-growing regional hobby. Now, Cool Springs Press brings its proven method of successful state-specific gardening approach to bird watching guides. In collaboration with Bird Watcher’s Digest, these bird watching guides provide accessible, credible advice.

The birds that frequent the backyards of South Carolina differ from the birds that frequent the backyards of Tennessee. In addition to unique descriptions, each bird profile includes a range map to identify each bird’s North American distribution. One hundred birds are profiled, each with a color photograph, to ensure accurate identification. A seasonal section informs the reader of:
Migrating birds that can be seen during that season
The foods and plants that can attract those birds
Where to go to view year-round and migrating birds

Cool Springs Press’s partner, Bird Watcher’s Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird species, bird habitat, feeding, and other related topics.

This series of books from Cool Springs Press targets the beginning bird watchers for ten states.

Customer Review: Occasional bird watcher
I’m not a die-hard bird watcher, but do feed them and enjoy them frequenting our property. Since moving to South Carolina, I have seen many that I am unfamiliar with, so this was the perfect book for me.
Customer Review: A nice book, but…
I am originally from the UK and have always had a huge interest in birds, but I have yet to learn about the birds I see here in South Carolina.

This is the only bird book I have for South Carolina/the USA, so I cannot compare it to similar books, but I would say that it is a good book to have for identifying birds that you spot in your yard or wherever.

I really like this book because

- it has nice clear pictures
- it tells you what you can expect to spot in each season
- it shows you the silhouettes of hawks and vultures, so you can tell at a glance what they are, even though they seem to be miles above you
- it tells you the food preferences and housing preferences of birds, so that you can encourage your favourite birds to visit
- it tells you local places to go to spot birds
- it tells you which birds are likely to be attracted to bird boxes, bird baths, bird feeders etc

The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that, for me, it doesn’t go into enough detail about the birds, specifically size details and bird calls.

Don’t get me wrong, it is a very informative book, with lots of hints and tips and useful information, but you might find that you need another book to accompany it, if you want a little more detail about the individual birds. Buy from here…
