    Customer Review: Excellent optics
I also own Swarovski and Leica binoculars and have used them extensively on my ranch in Montana in all conditions. I have been extremely happy with those products. I have preferred the Swarovski over the Lecias as they tend to be lighter and just feel better to me.

It was time to add another pair to my collection so I figured I would give the top end Bushnells a try. I was extremely surprised with the performance of these binoculars. They are very light in weight (lighter than the other brands) and do perform as well, if not better, than the other optics I have. In general they compete very well with the Swarovski and Leica optics and given they are so light in weight – they now have become my primary pair and visitors to the ranch get to use the others.

They perform excellent in low light and I have yet to have a fogging problem with them.

Maybe it’s just me, but I did not notice much difference between the 12.5x compared to the 10x Swarovskis – so you decide. I did a side by side test and the extra 2.5x does not make that big of a difference. But hey, bigger has to be better right? You should make the call on the trade off of more magnification vs wider field of view. I don’t have a problem finding what I am looking for as my binoculars live with me on the ranch, but if you struggle with putting the binoculars up and then finding what you are looking for, the 10x might be a better choice for you. I trust the 10x Bushnells will be the same quality as the 12.5x ones I purchased.

I have been using 10×42 binoculars so I was worried going with x50 as they might make the overall size of the binocular a bit bulky, but this is not the case with these.

I try not to abuse optics in this price range, so I did not drop test them or let them ride in the back of the pickup for a rattle test. But in looking them over, they appear to be very well built and can stand up to abuse as well as the other brands.

The focus control, etc is quick and easy.

Overall I am very pleased with the product. Buy from here…

National Geographic Field Guides to Birds: Florida (NG Field Guide to Birds)

    October 14, 2008

Customer Review: Florida birds in your pocket
This is fantastic to carry with you and being specialized for Florida that makes it easy to use and carry with you everywhere and all information for each bird!! Great !!!
    Customer Review: Disappointment
Having seen the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds I was interested in the Florida version. However after receiving the book and looking through it I was greatly disappointed. The illustrations (photographs?) are very poor as far as identifying many of the birds. The drawings of the full version are much superior. It is also very incomplete in its coverage of the birds present. Upon receiving it I tried looking up birds I had recently identified and found a surprising number missing from the book although I could see some of them in my yard trees. Florida’s Birds from Pineapple Press is much better although the first edition of it is also incomplete. I kept the NG book in my library but for now I will continue to use Sibley (Eastern Birds) and Stokes (Eastern Birds) as my field guides. One thing in favor of the NG Florida book is that it is small enough to actually be carried into the field easily. Buy from here…

Birding the Front Range: a Guide to Seasonal Highlights

    October 14, 2008

A guide to the birds and birding areas of Colorado’s Front Range. Emphasis is placed on the relationship of the birds to the region’s varied habitats. Five life zones are covered, from the High Plains to the alpine tundra. This book, illustrated with maps and photos, is an excel- lent resource for beginning birdwatchers and for those travelling to Colorado.
Customer Review: A reader from the high plains of Colorado
The description is a little misleading. This book does have information concerning the habitats in Colorado but within easy access from Denver and Colorado Springs and, in my opinion, does not accurately represent the front range. It gives locations of where birds were spotted but as a beginning bird watcher I am more interested in identifying the birds. There are no descriptions or photos of the types of birds. There are some photos but most appear to be scenic in nature and except for the front cover photo, they’re all black and white. Buy from here…

My Story as Told by Water: Confessions, Druidic Rants, Reflections, Bird-Watchings, Fish-Stalkings, Visions, Songs and Prayers Refracting Light, from Living Rivers, in the Age of the Industrial Dark

    October 11, 2008

In this remarkable collection of essays, David James Duncan, award-winning author of The River Why, braids his contemplative, activist, and rhapsodic voices together into a potently distinctive whole, speaking with power and urgency about the vital connections between our water-filled bodies and this water-covered planet.
The twenty-two essays in this collection swirl and eddy around the author’s early-forged bond with the rivers of the Pacific Northwest and their endangered native salmon. With a bracing blend of story, logic, science, and humor, Duncan relates mystical, life-changing fishing adventures; draws incisive portraits of the humans and wild creatures who shaped his destiny; attacks the corporate greed and political folly that have brought whole ecosystems to ruin; and meditates on the spiritual and practical necessity of acknowledging our dependence on water in its primal state.
Customer Review: Duncan leaves me speachless…
The conflicted fiction and non-fiction writer delivers a masterpiece. Thank you David.
    Customer Review: Self-indulgent nonsense
Duncan is a masterful wordsmith; this no one can reasonably dispute. But over the years, he has become so full of himself, so pretentious and self-important, that to me he is almost unreadable.

I give the book two stars because of a little bit of excellent fly fishing content, and because of Duncan’s undeniable writing ability. But before you buy it, you should read Donald Miller’s hilarious send-up of Duncan (whom he labels Trendy Writer) in “Blue Like Jazz.” Don Miller — now there’s a guy who has something significant to say on metaphysical themes. Duncan is merely showing off; Khwaja Khadir indeed! Buy from here…
