Finch Goes Wild

August 25, 2008

Harmon doesn’t fit in the hole he gets shoved into. He has to break out. In the bizarre world of middle school, no good deed goes unpunished. Students who do homework, friends who look out for each other, teachers who try to keep kids interested–they all get slammed. With his grades at an all-time low, and his weight off the charts, Harmon is headed for disaster. He’s bombarded by his classmates’ jeering, his mother’s nagging, his father’s expectations, and his doctor’s orders. Even in his music, he finds too many wrong notes. Just when he most wishes that the whole noisy world would just go away, he finds a new world worth exploring.
Customer Review: The Magic of a Normal Life
Gingold creates an unusual kid with the normal growing up problems — or maybe he is a normal kid with the an unusual opportunity. After a year of chaos at middle school, Finch studies at home. He gets a chance to deal with his own problems himself. He learns self reliance and the discipline to work hard at what he likes to do, a process many of us still struggle with well after middle school. The story is a refreshing take on our modern world. Without magic, or catastrophic changes, Finch figures out how to grow up. Buy from here…

Michigan Bird Watching: A Year-Round Guide

August 25, 2008

There are no state-specific books on how to appreciate birds and learn more about them. Like gardening, bird watching is a regional hobby, and the birds that frequent the backyards of Missouri differ from the birds found in Michigan. This series targets beginning and intermediate bird watchers from each Midwestern state.

The books are state-specific and highlight the birds that are found in each state. In addition to the profile, each bird entry includes a map to identity the specific range covered by the bird.

100 birds are presented via full-color photographs for accurate identification.

Full-color seasonal section informs the reader of: the migrating birds that can be seen that month, the foods that attract those birds, the plants that can assist in attracting birds.

Our partner, Bird Watcher’s Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird varieties, bird habitat, feeding, and related outdoor topics.

Guide to Birds of the Anza-Borrego Desert

August 25, 2008

Customer Review: Highly recommended as an addition to your birding library
The new “Guide to Birds of the Anza-Borrego Desert” by Barbara Massey, et al, is now available for $17.95. A lot of dedication and hard work went into the making of this book, which resulted in an excellent birder’s guide. There is a lot of information about the status of birds of Anza-Borrego. There is an extensive species accounts section that lists the abundance and location information of all birds seen in the State Park and gives locations on where the rarities were found. There is a section on Species of Special Interest, a plant list, census and count data, and a table of monthly occurence. The Site Guides are very thorough, giving a short introduction to the site, directions, user tips, trail descriptions and the vegetation to be found there, and tells what birds can be seen in what seasons and their occurence, and gives nesting data. Highly recommended as a great addition to any birding or desert natural history library. Buy from here…

Customer Review: Backyard Birding
excellent for the backyard birder. It offers really useful ideas for attracting birds and keeping them coming to your yard.
Customer Review: Great guide
I was sent this then-new book seven or eight years ago to review for my newspaper column on birds, and found it to be an excellent guide, not only on how to build boxes for all sorts of cavity-nesting birds, but also how to deal with problems like predators and pests. I built one of the boxes; it went together well and has served quite a few feathered families over the past five or six years. Buy from here…
