Illinois Bird Watching: A Year-Round Guide

June 12, 2008

There are no state-specific books on how to appreciate birds and learn more about them. Like gardening, bird watching is a regional hobby, and the birds that frequent the backyards of Missouri differ from the birds found in Michigan. This series targets beginning and intermediate bird watchers from each Midwestern state.

The books are state-specific and highlight the birds that are found in each state. In addition to the profile, each bird entry includes a map to identity the specific range covered by the bird.

100 birds are presented via full-color photographs for accurate identification. Full-color seasonal section informs the reader of: the migrating birds that can be seen that month, the foods that attract those birds, the plants that can assist in attracting birds.

Our partner, Bird Watcher’s Digest, has sold more than 4 million copies of their booklets on bird varieties, bird habitat, feeding, and related outdoor topics.

    June 9, 2008

Carson’s unique SuperZoom compact binocular allows you to view at 20x magnification and then zoom-in for pinpoint accuracy to 80x power, without ever losing sight of you object. The Z-80 Superzoom has high performance prisms and fully coated lenses that provide exceptionally sharp, high-contrast images.
Customer Review: Good but not good with zoom
This is good binocular but donot use for the zoom. Zoom is not good. It is enough powerful with 20x.
    Customer Review: Tripod a must!
Nice quality binocs but… With magnification this high the movement is also magnified extremely as well. Anything over the base power requires a tripod which takes away from the portability. A 25mm objective lense with this high of a magnification is like looking through a straw; NO field of view. If you want this much zoom, stick with a spotting scope (still need a tripod). Birding in Ohio

    June 9, 2008

Customer Review: Good reference either in or travelling to Ohio
Tom Thomson has extensive knowledge about birding in Ohio and has led many briding trips in the Buckeye state. I have attended trips with Tom. His knowledged has been expertly shared in this reference. These comments are not gratuitous, they are sincere.
Customer Review: Great directions, poor maps.
I’ve owned this book for a number of years, and have found it really helpful for finding prime birding locations in Ohio. It could stand a little updating, & the maps are not very useful, but the detailed directions of how to get to a location are really useful, when coupled with a DeLorme map for the state.

Thomson’s division of the state is also rather odd. There are locations that seem to be arbitrarily grouped into a geographic region that it doesn’t seem appropriate to be in.

Overall, it is very useful if you’re going to be doing birding in the state and are either a new Ohio birder, or coming from out-of-state to do some birding. Buy from here…
