Backyard Bird Identification Guide (T.F.H. Wild Birds Series)

June 29, 2008

Customer Review: Partial Backyard Bird Identification
It is a nice book but did not contain exactly what I was looking for - until you actually have it in your hands, there is no way to know. I am not sorry I bought it but this information was contained in other books I have.
Customer Review: Nice reference book
This is a good book for the novice birdwatcher, like myself. It shows the most common birds in color photographs along with info on each. A great starter book for wild bird lovers. Buy from here…

National Geographic Field Guide to Birds: California (NG Field Guide to Birds)

June 26, 2008

Customer Review: Fine for the beginner, but not the expert.
I have been a long time user of the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America. When I heard they were beginning to produce state or small area specific mini-guides, I welcomed the reduction in mass and volume for my back pack. However, the new California field guide fell short of my expectations. Less than 200 of the 600+ species observed in California were illustrated in this guide. As such, it holds little appeal to me as a true field guide. However, my volume has been passed to friends that enjoy feeding birds in their yard, but are rarely sure of the ID of their visitors. They have told me how much they enjoy the book and how useful they find it. This would appear to be the niche that this new set of guides will fill. It will whet the interest of new birders and feeders of birds. From there, hopefully they will find they enjoy the hobby enough to pursue it more completely. At that point, they will need more than this book can offer.
Customer Review: National Geographic Field Guide to Birds: California
We are really enjoying this book. We have recently moved to a new home and have placed many bird feeders in our yard. We can now identify most of the birds that are dining at our outdoor restaurant, which is providing much entertainment. Buy from here…

Stokes Oriole Book: The Complete Guide to Attracting, Identifying and Enjoying Orioles

June 26, 2008

the ideal guide for attracting these beloved birds with fruits and feeders. The Stokes offer a wealth of tips and tricks on everything from identification to feeding, including: information on migratory patterns and breeding ranges, advice on how to transform your property into an oriole habitat with nesting sites and materials, wild fruits, and insects and much more.
Customer Review: Sokes Oriole Guide Review
I enjoyed this book alot as you can see by me rating. It has alot of colorfull pictures, but could have more. It provides good information and it is to the point but they could have gone further to explain it better. They could have provided more information on specific feeders, and pictures and brand names to go along with their descriptions. All together I thought this was a great book. I would encourage any one who is interested in orioles or birds in general to read it.

Customer Review: Where’s volume 1 and 2?
Every serious birder should have the Master Guide. Unforntunately it is out of print and until the publisher decides to release it again so that one can have the complete set of all three volumes, it will leave a void in one’s birding library. It might be out of date (1983), but the photographs for the most part as well as the text are extremely helpful when used in conjunction with other field guides. Sometimes it is the guide that will finally answer the question of what bird was that when the other guides have left you guessing. Here’s hoping the publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, will release all three volumes again real soon! stormpetrel@msn.com Buy from here…

Hawk watch: A guide for beginners

June 26, 2008

Customer Review: useful
This is good book although I don’t usually use it as my first source. The pictures are looking up at the underside of the wings which is great if you go hawk watching at migrattion time and there are lots of them but I use North American Raptors by Wheeler/Clark more because it has great pictures and hawks I usually see are either flying by or are sitting on a telephone wire/tree branch. Still, its a good reference and has info on migration that you don’t get in other books. Its good as a supplement to other hawk books
Customer Review: The only “must have” for hawkwatchers
“Hawk Watch” is the best beginning guide to hawk watch identification and procedures available. Its large format and clear line drawings make it an excellent field reference. The text is direct and accurate. I am site compiler for a hawk watch, and this is the only reference that I urge my volunteers to purchase. Despite the fact that this work is limited to the species found in the eastern US, western birders would still find much of the text quite useful. Buy from here…
